SUMMARY OF THE EVENT: A major increase of Total Electron Content (TEC) (+15 TECu) in the ionosphere above Europe was observed on 1st of September 2012. A possible explanation might be the extreme UV pulses from the flares which have illuminated Earth's upper atmosphere, causing waves of ionization on the 31st of August 2012 (source: spaceweather.com).

Figure 1 shows the time evolution of the Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) (in red) extracted from the near-real time VTEC maps at 3 different latitudes (Figure 2): a) Northern part (top), b) Brussels (middle) and c) Southern part (bottom).
