Ionospheric Event 2012-11-01

Contact: iono@gnss.be

SUMMARY OF THE EVENT: The Total Electron Cntent (TEC) in the ionosphere was disturbed over Europe during the day and the evening of the 01/11/2012. This might be due to an increase in the solar wind density which was observed by ACE and SOHO/CELIAS satellites the 31/10/2012. The origin of the event is unclear but is possible related to a weak eruption and CME of last Saturday afternoon (Oct 27). (source :www.sidc.be).

Figure 1 shows the time evolution of the Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) (in red) extracted from the near-real time VTEC maps at 3 different latitudes (Figure 2): a) Northern part (top), b) Brussels (middle) and c) Southern part (bottom). Also shown, the model based on the median from the 15 previous days (in grey).
